Here's advice from "How to Survive Your Baby's First Year" (Hundreds of Heads Books, $12.95), from people who've done it:

  • Nap with baby.

  • Develop a sleep routine of reading to them and listening to music.

  • Use calming CDs such as "Waltz for Debby" by Bill Evans, or "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis.

    PESTS BE GONE

Spring is almost here, and so are the bugs that emerge looking for food, moisture and mates. Pest-control company Terminix (www.terminix.com) offers these tips:

  • Keep the area around your home dry; cockroaches love moisture.

  • Minimize mulch that looks nice but traps moisture.

  • Prune plants clear of buildings or pests will come indoors.

  • Clear rubbish and debris outdoors and indoors.

  • Check screens.

  • White light near windows attracts pests; use sodium vapor light that has a yellower cast at vulnerable spots.
