BYUH men fall, 71-68

Prentice Harris scored 18 points and Ivan Johnson added 16 as Cal State San Bernardino ousted Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 71-68, in the opening round yesterday of the NCAA Division II men's basketball West Regional at Arcata, Calif.
BYUH, the region's seventh seed, finished 20-8. Cal State-San Bernardino, seeded second, is 23-5.
Eric Boyce led BYUH with 18 points. Lucas Alves had 13 points and seven rebounds.
BYUH shot 62 percent (26 of 42) from the field, but was plagued by 31 turnovers. CSUSB shot 45 percent (25 of 56).
The semifinals of the regional will be held today, with the championship game for a berth in the Elite Eight taking place Monday.
WHITING HONORED
Chaminade senior guard Zack Whiting, a Bob Cousy Award finalist, was named to the first team of the Daktronics NCAA Division II West Region team.
He is the only player from a Hawai'i Division II college to be named to the team, selected by the sports information directors of NCAA II West Region schools that sponsor men's basketball.
All five first-team selections will now go on the national ballot for Daktronics All-American.
Humboldt State senior forward Kevin Johnson was named Player of the Year.
Joining Johnson and Whiting were Jontae Vinson of Cal State-Los Angeles, Jushay Rockett of Alaska-Fairbanks and Dustin Bremerman of Seattle Pacific.
WILY HONORED
Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Latoya Wily was named to the Daktronics West Region Second Team.
Wily, a junior from La'ie, led the first-year Seasiders to a winning record at 13-12 and to a second-place finish in the Pacific West Conference with an 11-4 mark.
She leads the nation in NCAA Division II play in rebounding with 14.2 per game and is 14th nationally in scoring at 20.5 points per game. She also ranks 28th nationally in field-goal percentage at 53.6 percent.

HILO SWEEPS TWO
Charity Sanas went 2 for 4 with three RBIs as the University of Hawai'i-Hilo beat Notre Dame de Namur, 6-5, in the first game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday in Hilo.
Hilo (20-2, 8-0 PacWest) won the nightcap over Notre Dame de Namur (7-28, 2-10), 5-0.

ALL PAC-WEST TEAM
University of Hawai'i-Hilo junior forward Karen Weatherby was named co-Player of the Year, and Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Emily Mearns freshman of the year on the Pacific West Conference's women's soccer team announced Thursday.
Four other Hawai'i athletes also were named to the first team. They are BYUH junior forward Jill Harr (Diamond Bar, Calif.), Hawai'i Pacific junior goalkeeper Melisaa Naeole (Kahului, St. Anthony), HPU senior defender Kerianne Pascua (Kane'ohe, Maryknoll), and Hawai'i-Hilo freshman midfielder Kelly White (Santa Barbara).
The all-conference awards were nominated and voted upon by the league coaches (BYUH, HPU, UH-Hilo, Chaminade, Notre Dame de Namur and Grand Canyon).
