The New Frontier will close at midnight July 15, making way for a 3,500-room megaresort patterned after New York City's Plaza Hotel. The latest plans suggest the budget for the project could be as high as $5 billion, not counting the $1.2 billion purchase price for the old casino and its land. If true, the Las Vegas Plaza's price tag will be second only to MGM-Mirage's CityCenter.

No. 11: Poker phenom Phil Hellmuth Jr. has done it — for the 11th time. Hellmuth won the $1,500 no-limit hold 'em event, beating 2,627 players, to earn his record 11th World Series of Poker championship bracelet. Hellmuth now stands alone, with Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan tied at second with 10 each.

Baby dolphin: One of the bottlenose dolphins at the Mirage has given birth. Mother and baby boy are doing fine. For now, they'll remain in the Mirage's dolphin habitat and can be viewed by the public ($15 entry).

Tribal gaming: The take from gambling at American Indian-owned casinos jumped 11 percent in 2006 to reach $25.1 billion. The numbers were compiled from 387 gambling facilities in 28 states (some of the total 415 facilities from 200 tribes have not yet been counted). The tribal revenue has doubled in five years and is nearly twice that of Nevada, which won $12.6 billion last year.

Silverton sign-up: New members signing up for the Discovery players club at Silverton get a choice of either $40 in slot play for a $20 buy-in or a $20 matchplay coupon good for use on table games. While both are good, the $40-for-$20 slot deal is the stronger of the two.
