Ancient Hawaiians used plants to make musical instruments, and families can learn more about that from 10 a.m. to noon June 23 at the Waimea Valley Audubon Center.

Aunty Kanani, the valley's kupuna, will lead a tour of the ethnobotanical collection to familiarize children and adults with plants that were turned into musical instruments, including bamboo, coconut, gourds and a variety of wood.

During Ke Kani O Na Mea Ulu or The Sound of Growing Things, people will collect material and make an instrument to take home.
