Jean Anouilh's "Antigone" is based on the Greek tragedy by Sophocles, but with a much more modern twist. There are technological advances, but the storyline is the same: One of Antigone's brothers is to be buried with honors, while the other is left to rot. What happens when Antigone defies the decree? Island songstress Mihana performs with Grammy Award winner Jeff Peterson on guitar, 'ukulele legend Bill Tapia, sax master David Choy, Ernie Provencher on bass and Abe Lagrimas on drums. Members of Kahala Moon and Puamana add to the concerts' lively blend of jazz, country, rock and Hawaiian melodies. Mihana's first album "Rust on the Moon" won a Na Hoku Hanohano award in 2003; her followup is "One Little Dream." Her next CD will be culled from the pair of concerts.

Remember the tiki days of Martin Denny and the aloha spirit that captured America in the '50s and '60s? Well, it's back, updated, in the form of Hula A-Go-Go: Exotica Cabaret, which features music, costumes and dancing girls of the Cherry Blossom Cabaret. Also on the bill:The Hell Caminos, Black Square with guest singer Kitty Chow, surf rockers Dr. Zaius, a James Bond-themed set by the band Temporary Lovers with guest vocalists Stephanie Kong and Catwings. Suspicious Minds will make a special appearance as they reunite for this event. The Cherry Blossom Cabaret, including Mishy Le Fleur, right, will perform theatrical skits, dance routines and a special fire performance.

DANCE: JUNE 29-JULY 1
Innovative dance troupe 24-VII brings "Red" to the Paliku Theatre stage, with more than 120 dancers from 24-VII Danceforce, University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior Dancers and the University of Hawai'i Drumforce. The program includes new choreography in a variety of dance styles such as jazz, hip-hop, modern, breakdancing and drumming. Elaborate costumes are promised, too.

For those who just can't wait, Aloha Tower Marketplace will host a pre-Independence Day celebration with a fireworks display, food, entertainment and fun for the whole family. A fashion show, the Pacific Fleet Band, Brittni Paiva, TJ Mayeshiro, strolling entertainers, face- and hair-painting, a balloon artist and more will be on multiple stages.

Former "American Idol" contestant and Nu-yorican heartthrob Mario Vazquez, whose hit "Gallery" (written by Ne-Yo) took the airwaves by storm, will light up Fashion 45 on the Fourth of July. From the soaring ballad "One Shot" to the reggaeton-flavored "Cohiba," Vazquez proves he can deliver the notes. As for his "American Idol" stint: Fans will recall that he voluntarily withdrew when he reached the top 12 in season four.

COMEDY: JULY 7
Writer, actor, comedian Jim Gaffigan brings his sold-out nationwide "Beyond the Pale" Comedy Central tour to Hawai'i. Gaffigan has established himself through performances on Comedy Central, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, special appearances on TV shows "Ed," "Sex in the City" and starring in the TBS comedy series "My Boys" and "That 70's Show." He was featured on Comedy Central's stand-up special "Beyond the Pale" in 2005, which became a best-selling DVD.

Halau from Japan and Hawai'i come together once again to celebrate hula's rich traditions at the two-part, sixth annual Hula Ho'olauna Aloha Festival. The first day is a dance exhibition; the second is a competition/demonstration.

FESTIVAL: JULY 14
"See, Taste, Listen Korea!" at the 6th annual Korean Festival featuring Korean music, dance, food, cultural displays, family activities, as well as Korean-made and local products. Highlights include Korean cooking demonstrations, kim chee eating contest (below), youth singing contest and more. The event is presented by The Hawaii Korean Chamber of Commerce.
