Google shows how to add fun to office

Google's new Ann Arbor, Mich., offices are home to a colorful playground of cubicles that feature Mr. Potato Heads, plastic superhero dolls, Elmos and hammocks. Some cubicles bear signs of Michigan's four distinct seasons. Umbrellas and wading pools surrounded the area.
"It makes the office fun," said Tracy Weaver, Google facilities manager and decor committee member. But it's possible to go a bobble head too far.
She offers advice about the ins and outs of cubicle decor:
Safety first: Make sure you obey safety guidelines. Don't cover up sprinklers or use things that easily can catch on fire.
Keep your co-workers in mind: Keep it politically correct. Be sure you don't offend others' cultures, religions or politics.
Don't overdo it: Balance professionalism with fun. It's all fine and good to have G.I. Joes and Tonka trucks lying about, but not if they're so distracting you can't get your work done.
Plan together, add candy: Coordinate with your cube mates on how they would like their workspaces to look. Have a decorating competition. Make it welcoming. Candy dishes tend to make workspaces approachable.
Make it look like home: Pick something personal — pictures of your mate, children, pets or friends — something that inspires, relaxes or makes your place homey.
