INITIATIVES SEEK TO ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO PICK UP A BOOK

HERE'S HOW TO GET YOUR KIDS TO READ OVER SUMMER VACATION

Research shows that many children experience a decline in reading proficiency during summer vacation. Thirty-two percent of U.S. fourth-graders reported that they never or rarely read for fun outside of school — a significantly higher percentage than the international average of 18 percent.

Two national initiatives aim to encourage students to actively read over the summer:

  • Reading Rockets — With funding from the U.S. Department of Education, this program offers reading strategies, lessons and activities designed to help young children learn how to read and struggling readers improve comprehension skills. Visit http://readingrockets.org or call (703) 998-2001.

  • Reading Is Fundamental's National Book Program — This program delivers free books and literacy resources to families. The program is available in all 50 states in a variety of settings, including schools, community centers, churches and health clinics. Visit www.rif.org or call (877) RIF-READ.
