COCONUT WIRELESS: Besides Loretta Ables Sayre, who is reprising her role as Pua Lusa in "You Somebody," the Lee Cataluna comedy with Keola Beamer music set for a revival July 13 at Diamond Head Theatre, look for Angela Morales, one third of NŠ Leo Pilimehana, portraying Mrs. Baga (the competing matriarch from the other family, vying to be "somebody" with a boldface name in this column).
John Kolivas will conduct the orchestra, and he latched on to real tuneful "somebodies" for his ork: Bryan Kessler on guitar, Tim Tsukiyama on sax, and Sonny Froman on drums. ...
SPEAKING OF KOLIVAS: He's the leader of the Honolulu Jazz Quartet, of course, and the HJQ will perform in interactive concerts at 8 p.m. June 15-16 at the Honolulu Design Center, partnering with dancer Pam Sandridge and painter Lauren Okano, all to HJQ music. And Robert Pennybacker's film "Jazz and the Creative Act" will be shown. ...
NAMES 'N' FACES: When 900 people honored Sen. Daniel K. Inouye at the East-West Center last Friday night, the musical tribute featured Eddie Kamae & the Sons of HawaiŤi. That's not the item. This is: The Sons of HawaiŤi ranks grew by two, when Inouye joined the group, singing along to "Kaimana Hila," and then Sen. Daniel Akaka chimed in on the second verse. ...
Lenny Klompus, of the governor's office, has a busy summer ahead. He'll do a non-singing role (Commander Harbison) in the Hawaii Opera Theatre's "South Pacific," playing July 27-29 and Aug. 3-5 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall, and he'll also co-star with Tina Shelton in Army Community Theatre's "Once Upon a Mattress," premiering Sept. 6 at Richardson Theatre for a three-weekend run. ...
Is it the water? Or the teachers? A number of community queens have Saint Francis School roots: Nadine Moniz Wise, recently crowned Mrs. Hawaii (class of 1982); Chanel Wise, Nadine's daughter, is the reigning Miss Hawaii U.S.A. (class of 2003); and Leslie Marques Lam was Mrs. America 2000 (class of 1983). ...
ITEMIZATIONS: It's not likely to be an "Emme's Island Moment" you'll see on her specials, but TV host-producer Emme Tomimbang, back from a Las Vegas trip where she took in Celine Dion at Caesars Palace and the Society of Seven at the Flamingo, had a "moment" to remember. At Elton John's Caesars closing, she was up front with a couple of pals, and wound up dancing on stage at the finale. "Emme in the New Las Vegas" is the theme of her next special, airing at 9 p.m. June 28 (repeating at 3 p.m. June 30) on KHON 2. The special depicts the SOS in concert (they play the Blaisdell Concert Hall July 13-14), golfer Dean Wilson, ex-local chef Jean-Marie Josselin (whose 808 restaurant is a Caesars fixture), with nods to Bette Midler (who'll assume Dion's showroom slot) and a remembrance of the late Don Ho (who played the Flamingo early in his career). ...
Nice to see Montel Williams, the syndicated talk show host, sitting alongside KHNL 8's morning co-anchors, Marvin Buenconsejo and Angela Keen, the other day, delving in the routine of delivering the news, reading from the teleprompters and fielding commentary from the field. He blended so well, it felt like he'd been doing the stint for eons, not allowing local words to get in the way. By the way, Keen is multilingual - fluent in German, and conversant in Spanish and Thai plus a little Hawaiian. "I've always had a deep love for language," she told Keith Haugen, who himself sang in several tongues when he was a guest on the morning show earlier this year. "The little bag of languages I carry in my back pocket — it's my way of connecting heart to heart," said Keen. ...
