Fire crews yesterday managed to contain 80 percent of a Kaluako'i brushfire that burned an estimated 3,000 acres.
The fire started about noon Monday, and light winds and rain Monday night and yesterday morning helped to keep the fire from spreading, said county spokeswoman Mahina Martin. No homes were threatened by the blaze, she said.
The area was monitored by fire crews yesterday, with a helicopter dispatched to survey the burned ground. Nine county firefighters from Maui who had been flown to Moloka'i on Monday for additional support returned to Maui yesterday.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
