DANE SARDINHA BLASTS 3 HOMERS FOR TOLEDO

Dane Sardinha, a 1997 Kamehameha Schools graduate, had a banner game yesterday.

The catcher went 3 for 3 — all home runs — and drove in seven runs to lead the Toledo Mudhens over the Richmond Braves, 10-3, in a Triple-A game in Toledo, Ohio.

Sardinha, who walked his first time up, hit a solo home run in the third inning, a two-run shot in the sixth inning and a three-run blast in the seventh.

Sardinha, 28, was batting ninth.

"You're going to see a lot of fastballs," he said in an article on MLB.com. "I think later they tried to start me off with sliders."

Sardinha hit his three home runs off of three Richmond relievers.

Sardinha had just four home runs in his previous 90 games (he hit his fourth on Sunday). His outburst last night boosted his slugging percentage from .293 to .331.

HILO TOPS ARIZONA, 11-1, IN WEST REGIONAL

Kolten Wong hit a home run and Blake Amaral added a double as Hilo rolled over Arizona, 11-1, yesterday in the Little League Seniors (ages 14-16) West Regional in Salem, Ore., in a game shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.

Hilo allowed only two hits.

The win leaves Hilo at 2-0 in pool play of the tournament. Hilo continues pool play against Northern California today.

On Sunday, Wong and Thad Yasuhara drove in two runs apiece and three pitchers combined on a one-hitter to lead Hilo past Alaska, 10-1.

Jeremy Crivello, Keaka Pilayo and Kendal Ushijima held Alaska to one run and the Hilo offense put up six runs in the top of the first inning.
