TRYOUTS FOR MUSICAL

A final audition for Army Community Theatre's "Once Upon a Mattress," the first musical of the fall season, will be held at 7 p.m. today at Richardson Theatre at Fort Shafter.

The show, inspired by "The Princess and the Pea," has roles for men and women singers and dancers. Key roles have been pre-cast, with Tina Shelton, Lenny Klompus and Renee Garcia Hartenstein already aboard. It will be staged Sept. 6-22.

Other performers are sought.

Richard MacPherson will direct, Grace Bell Humerickhouse will choreograph, and Kala'i Stern will conduct the orchestra.

BEER FEST AT RYAN'S

Ryan's Grill's summer Beer Fest, featuring more than 100 brews from Germany, New Zealand, China, Mexico and other nations, will begin Wednesday and continue through Aug. 29 at the Ward Centre restaurant.

A special menu is being offered to match beer with cuisine.

As part of the celebration, Music Wednesday, from 9 p.m. to midnight, will feature such Island bands as B.E.T., Next Generation and Keahiwai.

Also, Robin Uyeda, Ryan's executive chef, will conduct "Cooking with Brews" classes from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 18. The $30 tuition includes hands-on participation and a beer dinner to follow.

KAHUMOKU ON PBS

Grammy Award-winning slack-key master and cultural treasure George Kahumoku Jr. appears in PBS Hawaii's Na Mele series, airing at 7:30 pm. today.

"George's gift of music is captured in compelling style against the beautiful backdrop of his backyard on Maui. Viewers will see a rare and personal side of George: his profound respect for the Hawaiian culture and his high regard for helping the younger generation as they make their way through life," said Leslie Wilcox, PBS Hawaii's president and CEO, in a statement.

Kahumoku, often called the "Hawaiian Renaissance Man" for his knowledge of and interest in diverse disciplines, plays classic favorites, such as "Ho'okupa" and "Hi'ilawe," on his 12-string guitar with his nephew, Lopaka Naihe, performing the hula.

The program, sponsored by Hawaiian Airlines, is part of a series of performances of Hawaiian traditional music, now airing at 7:30 p.m. Mondays.

HORSE SHOW

The Hawaii Horse Show Association will host its first Western horse show of the season on Saturday at Circle C Ranch, 41-539 Makakalo St., Waimanalo. The show is free and open to the public.

A range of competitive classes will be on display, including trail class, reining horse, pole bending and barrels. Classes start at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day.

Competitors will dress in colorful Western show gear as they maneuver through courses and equitation classes that will challenge both horse and rider.

This show is classified as a United States Equestrian Federation Local Competition. The official guest judge is Patty Felker, a certified judge known throughout the equestrian show circuit.
