Joseph Ngwenya scored twice and Brian Ching and Stuart Holden each added goals to lead the host Houston Dynamo to a 4-0 Major League Soccer victory over the New York Red Bulls last night.

Houston (8-5-2) is unbeaten in seven games since a 2-1 loss at D.C. United May 26. The Dynamo haven't allowed a goal in four straight games, including a scoreless tie at Dallas last week.

New York (6-5-3) lost for the third time in four games. The Red Bulls have a tie in that stretch and haven't won since a 2-1 victory at Toronto June 6.

Ngwenya scored on a header in the 28th minute to give Houston a 1-0 lead.

The play began after New York's Kevin Goldthwaite was given a yellow card for tripping. Ngwenya took the free kick from Holden and punched it in the left corner of the goal.

Ching, a Kamehameha Schools alum from Hale'iwa, scored in the 31st minute to make it 2-0. Ching had a header seconds earlier that rebounded off the left post. The Red Bulls tried to clear it from the front of the goal but the ball came right back to Ching, who kicked it in from 20 yards.

Ngwenya netted his second goal early in the second half off a corner kick by Holden. From close in, Ngwenya sent the ball to the right corner, and New York goalie Ronald Waterreus let it slip through his hands as he fell back into the goal in the 50th minute.

In the 79th minute, Holden took a pass from Nate Jaqua and kicked a shot in from 22 yards for a 4-0 lead.

U.S. GOES 0-3 IN COPA

Brad Guzan made several key saves, including one on a penalty kick, but he couldn't get to Jaime Castrillon's 14th-minute header and the United States lost 1-0 to Colombia last night in Barquisimeto, Venezula, completing an 0-3 trip to the Copa America.

The United States lost three in a row for the first time since World Cup qualifiers against Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica from July to September 2001.

Colombia (1-2) and the United States were eliminated from South America's championship Wednesday when Brazil beat Ecuador.

LILLY TO BE HONORED

U.S. national team captain Kristine Lilly will be honored in front of her home-state crowd before the United States plays Norway in East Hartford, Conn., July 14 in a Women's World Cup warmup.

Lilly, who grew up in Wilton, has played in 327 international matches, more than any player. She'll turn 36 before heading to her fifth World Cup. Lilly's 123 career goals are second among women to former U.S. teammate Mia Hamm.

Abby Wambach, who has 74 goals in 92 games, will join Lilly, Lindsay Tarpley and Kahuku High and University of Hawai'i alum Natasha Kai among the forwards for the first in the series of exhibitions used as a tuneup for the World Cup, Sept. 10 to 30 in China.

Dominik Hasek and the Detroit Red Wings agreed to terms of a one-year contract that is worth more than $2 million in base salary and gives the 42-year-old goalie a chance to earn an additional $2 million in bonuses. ... Jocelyn Thibault, a 13-year NHL veteran who spent the past two seasons as a backup in Pittsburgh, signed a one-year contract with Buffalo as the Sabres bolstered their backup goaltending depth through free agency.
