Wedemeyer inducted into National High School Hall of Fame

Hawai'i's Charlie Wedemeyer, a three-sport, all-star athlete at Punahou School in the 1960s, yesterday was inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame in Indianapolis.
The ceremony was the closing event of the National Federation of State High School Associations. Wedemeyer, his wife Lucy, and family attended the event. Keith Amemiya, executive director of the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association, also attended.
Wedemeyer was one of 12 in this year's class, which included athletes Clyde Duncan, Jim Johnson, Jim Plunkett and Terry Steinbach; coaches John Bagonzi, Lewis Benitz, Rick Insell and Joan Wells; officials Jane Hansen and Sam Short and reporter Tim Stevens.
Wedemeyer, an all-league pick in football, basketball and baseball, was selected The Advertiser's Hawai'i Athlete of the Decade for the 1960s. He went on to play football for Michigan State, and then coached high school football.
For the past 30 years, Wedemeyer, who lives in Los Gatos, Calif., has battled amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's Disease.
BASKETBALL
WARRIORS WIN TITLE
The Hawai'i Warriors basketball team won the boys 14-under division at the National Junior Basketball Swoosh Spectacular in Las Vegas Sunday.
The Warriors, made up of Big Island players, went 3-0 in pool play and defeated Whittier And1 of California for the title.
Members of the team were: Isaak Janado, Kainoa Kawaha, Lanaki Apele, Gideon Kalili, Jordan Victorine, Will Scanlan-Leite, Richie Handy, Adam Andrade and Shaun Kagawa
Another Big Island team, the Hawai'i 614 Wahine Warriors, finished second in the girls 13-under division. Hawai'i 967 Ballaz finished fourth in the same division.
Members of Hawai'i 614 were: Dawnyelle Awa, Ashlyn Flores, Thea Hanato-Smith, Shaylyn Kahawai, Bobbi Montibon, Ciera Pacheco and Anuhea Wall.
The Hawai'i Wahine Warriors finished third in the girls high school elite division, beating the Ventura County (Calif.) Spartans, 58-45, for third.
In the boys 10 division, the Hawai'i Warriors finished fourth and in the boys high school division, Hawai'i Rain was third and Hawai'i Da Kine was fifth.
HURRICANES AT BLAISDELL
The newly formed Hawaii Hurricanes of the American Basketball Association will use the Blaisdell Arena as their home court, the team announced.
The Hurricanes, who will begin their first season in November, will mainly play opponents in the ABA's Western Division, which includes teams from Las Vegas, California, Washington and Oregon.

LAM LOSES, WITHDRAWS
Honolulu's Chris Lam went into the $10,000 Dick's Sporting Goods Futures event at Pittsburgh with a career-high No. 2 seed in singles. He came out with first-round losses in singles and doubles and a sore right wrist and shoulder that forced him to withdraw from next week's $10,000 Peoria Futures.
After losing in doubles, Lam fell to Tigran Martirosyan, 6-4, 6-2, then returned to California to take care of his injuries.
Last Sunday, Lam and Gregory Ouellette fell in the doubles final of the $10,000 Buffalo Bills Futures in Rochester, N.Y.. They lost to fellow Americans Cory Parr and Todd Paul, 6-4, 6-1.
