How Hawai'i Sens. Daniel Akaka and Daniel K. Inouye and Reps. Neil Abercrombie and Mazie K. Hirono voted in key legislation last week.
KEY SENATE VOTES
1. IMMIGRATION OVERHAUL DEFEAT
The Senate voted 53-46 Thursday to defeat attempts to bring immigration overhaul legislation to a final vote, likely killing the bill for this congressional session. The bill fell 14 votes short of the required 60 to proceed, after weeks of contentious debate. Twelve Republicans voted to continue with a vote while 15 Democrats voted against.

2. Union organizing bill
Senate Republicans blocked a bill Tuesday that would have made it easier for unions to organize workers. The 51-48 vote fell nine votes short of the 60 needed to limit debate and move toward a final vote on the bill. The bill, called the Employee Free Choice Act, passed the House earlier this year.

KEY HOUSE VOTES
1. Lawmaker raise approved
The House passed a procedural vote 244-181 Wednesday that allows the scheduled pay raise for lawmakers to proceed without being challenged. A cost-of-living raise is automatic unless it is blocked, as was the case last year. This year's increase is about $4,400, which makes most House members' annual salary nearly $170,000. A yes vote on the motion had the effect of allowing the pay raise to automatically take effect.

2. Interior spending bill
The House on Wednesday voted 272-155 for $27.6 billion in funding for the Interior Department, Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies, a 4.3 percent increase over current spending after years of cuts. The Senate still must take up the measure. The White House has threatened a veto because the bill is too expensive.
