Man, 75, dies while kayaking

A 75-year-old man died yesterday after apparently suffering a medical condition while kayaking off Lanikai.

The man was kayaking with a group off Lanikai Beach Park about 4 p.m. when he apparently became ill and fell into the water.

Bystanders brought him to shore, where lifeguards and firefighters administered CPR.

The man was pronounced dead at Castle Medical Center.



BIG ISLAND GIRL MISSING SINCE MAY

Police on the Big Island are searching for a teenage girl who has been missing for more than a month.

Brittany Dumlao, 16, described as Filipino, 5-foot-3, about 118 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, has been missing since May 25, police said.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about her whereabouts to contact Officer B J Duarte of the Hilo Juvenile Aid Section at 961-2373, or call the Police Department's non-emergency telephone number at 935-3311.

Anyone with information who wishes to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.



NORTH KOHALA BRUSHFIRE PUT OUT

An early-morning brushfire on the Big Island burned more than 600 acres of tall grasses and keawe trees yesterday before it was extinguished about 8 a.m.

Firefighters got to the scene about 12:04 a.m.

The fire was in North Kohala on Akoni Pule Highway, between Mahukona and Lapakahi.

The highway was closed briefly, and a few campers in the area were evacuated to safety, fire officials said.

About 18 firefighters pushed back the blaze, which was moving toward the sea. In addition to dousing the flames with water, they used two bulldozers to create a fire break along the Lepakahi side.



WOMAN INJURED IN FALL FROM VEHICLE

A 21-year-old woman who is six months pregnant was seriously injured yesterday after falling off an all-terrain vehicle in Kahuku.

The accident happened about 6 p.m. on a field on Po'ohaili Place.

The woman was taken to Kahuku Hospital, then airlifted to the Queen's Medical Center.

The condition of the fetus was unknown.
