Hawai'i services for Michael Lemke, a veteran newspaper executive and former Honolulu resident, will be held Friday at Star of the Sea Church.
Lemke, 53, died June 23 at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, eight months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. A graduate of Saint Louis High School and the University of Hawai'i, he was the son of the late Herman Lemke Sr., a former Honolulu City Council chairman and mayoral candidate who died in 2001.
The younger Lemke was senior vice president for sales and marketing at the Seattle Times, overseeing both print and online advertising at that paper and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer under a joint-operating agreement. During the mid-1990s, Lemke led efforts that resulted in the creation of the Times' Web site.
In January he was honored with the Distinguished Service Award by the Newspaper Association of America for his innovations in online and niche marketing.
Lemke was born Oct. 15, 1953, in Honolulu.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and daughters Rachel and Sarah, all of Woodway, Wash.; his mother, Florence Lemke; brothers, David and Herman Jr.; and sisters, Marlene Lemke and Adele Badone, all of Honolulu.
Visitation will begin at 8:15 a.m. Friday, with a Mass at 9 a.m. The family requests casual attire and that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the McCloud Healthcare Clinic, P.O. Box 1143, McCloud, CA 96057-1143; or the Pancreaticobiliary Research Fund, c/o Virginia Mason Seattle Main Clinic, 1100 Ninth Ave., Seattle, WA 98101, Attn: Dr. Vincent Picozzi.
