Oregon State no-hits Hawai'i-Hilo in opener, 5-0

Advertiser Staff

Four pitchers combined on a no-hitter and Oregon State cruised to a 5-0 win over Hawai'i-Hilo in the season opener for both teams at Francis Wong Stadium yesterday.

Mike Stutes struck out seven batters in his five innings of work and picked up the win for the defending national champion Beavers (1-0).

Josh Keller tossed a perfect sixth and seventh innings with a pair of strikeouts. Mark Grbavac and Jorge Reyes completed the shutout. OSU pitchers gave up just three walks.

Beavers' second baseman Joey Wong scored the game's first run on a Vulcan throwing error.

Mitch Canham hit a two-out double to rightfield and scored on Mike Lissman's RBI single to left in the OSU fifth.

Lars Knepper took the loss for UH-Hilo (0-1). He gave up two runs — one earned — on five hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The Beavers got a pair of insurance runs in the eight inning. Designated hitter Jason Ogata drew a bases-loaded walk to plate John Wallace and Darwin Barney came home on an RBI single by Canham.

Oregon State ended UH-Manoa's season in the NCAA regionals last year at Corvallis. The Rainbows open their season tonight, hosting Santa Clara at 6:35 p.m.

The four-game series between the Vulcans and Beavers continues today with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at Wong Stadium.
