Two men held in Kahala carjacking, kidnapping

Police have arrested two men believed to be responsible for a carjacking and kidnapping at gunpoint this week in Kahala.

Christopher Gallarde, 27, was arrested yesterday on suspicion of kidnapping, robbery and auto theft, said Honolulu Police Capt. Frank Fujii. Gallarde has felony convictions for kidnapping, sexual assault, firearm possession, and terrorist threatening, police said.

Responding to a call at 1 p.m. yesterday, police said they went to a home in Pearl City and saw two men stripping a car that had been stolen earlier in the day. The men ran into a house on Kanihi Street and barricaded themselves inside before surrendering. Police found a handgun at the Pearl City home that they believe was used in the carjacking in Kahala, Fujii said.

"I think the community should be relieved," he said. "Someone, who we considered armed and dangerous, with six prior felony convictions, is now arrested."

A 27-year-old 'Aiea man, who evidently is not a suspect in the kidnapping, was also arrested.

Later yesterday, police were called to Waipahu and said they found the second suspect in the carjacking, a 29-year-old Waipahu man. He was arrested on suspicion of robbery and kidnapping and is believed to have eight prior convictions, Fujii said.

Police said the kidnapping on Tuesday occurred at about 4:30 p.m. after a woman and a man pulled their 1990 silver Lexus LS into a driveway on Alakoa Street.

At the same time, two men in a red car confronted them and demanded money. One of the men had a 9 mm pistol, police said. The men ordered the woman out of the car, robbed her of cash and drove off with the 20-year-old male passenger and a 21-year-old man who had come out of the house. The 21-year-old was released unharmed about 30 minutes later at Kahala Elementary School. The other man escaped by jumping out of the car on University Avenue about 10:45 p.m.

The stolen Lexus was recovered near 7th Avenue. Police suspect the incident is drug related.
