Moanalua’s Casey Schuler drives for the go-ahead basket with three seconds left and draws a foul by Kaimukď’s Beau Albrechtson. Schuler’s layup made it 64-62. He missed the ensuing free throw, but Kaimukď could not get a shot off. Moanalua improved to 5-1 in the OIA East.

Casey Schuler scored on a breakaway layup with three seconds remaining last night to lift visiting Moanalua to a pulsating 64-62 victory over Kaimuki in a key O'ahu Interscholastic Association showdown.

Na Menehune, ranked No. 8 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 5-1 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division. Kaimuki, ranked No. 5, fell to 4-2.

Moanalua was coming off a heartbreaking 42-41 loss to Kailua (3-2) on Saturday.

"It hurt to lose like that, but Coach (Greg Tacon) said we just gotta come back stronger," said Schuler, a 6-foot-1 senior forward who was fouled on the winning play but missed the ensuing free throw. "We knew that Kaimuki was one of the biggest games on the schedule."

After Schuler's missed free throw, the Bulldogs' Beau Albrechtson grabbed the rebound and called timeout with 2.7 seconds left.

But Kaimuki's pass to halfcourt was intercepted and Na Menehune dribbled out the final two ticks.

Schuler said he was an unlikely option to take the last shot.

The play started when Albrechtson missed the second of two free throws after tying the score 62-62 with 10 seconds remaining and Moanalua grabbed the rebound. Guard Stevie Austin started to dribble upcourt and found Schuler wide open speeding down the right sideline. After catching the pass in stride just past halfcourt, he raced to the basket and scored while being fouled.

"They were playing up on Stevie, because he's good at getting the ball up the court quickly, so everybody was expecting him to keep the ball," Schuler said. "When he passed to me, I had an open lane so I went for it. I kind of got lucky."

Kaimuki was up by as much as 31-24 in the first half and led for most of the game. But Advertiser All-State forward Keone Reyes was whistled for his fourth foul with 1:44 remaining in the third period and sat on the bench until 4:27 to play, with the score tied 55-55.

Reyes, who had 12 points in the first half and finished with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists, fouled out on a player control call while driving to the basket with 1:09 remaining. He and Albrechtson (24 points, eight rebounds) had controlled the paint.

"Their two studs are studs, and we couldn't do a thing to stop them," Tacon said. "Not having Keone in there changes everything, so we were fortunate."

The Bulldogs suffered another bad break when starting guard Daniel Colon pulled up with cramps in his right leg twice in the final four minutes.

"Keone and Daniel each average 29 minutes per game," Kaimuki coach Kelly Grant said. "It hurt not having Keone in there, but give Moanalua credit. They played a good game."
