Water service disrupted at UH
Advertiser Staff
A water line break caused by construction workers cut off supply to about one-fourth of the University of Hawai'i's Manoa campus for more than five hours yesterday, but daily operations on the campus continued for the most part.
The break occurred at about 9:50 a.m. at the Frear Hall project when Jayar Construction, the excavating contractor, struck an 8-inch, high-pressure water line located 2 to 3 feet below the surface, said Jim Manke, university spokesman.
An estimated 390,000 gallons of water was released and environmental measures were used to protect Manoa Stream, Dole Street and the catch basins on the bridge, Manke said. The sidewalk was closed, and water to some nearby buildings was shut off or severely restricted, including some student residence halls.
The water main was repaired by 3:30 p.m.
