Punahou wins, 51-45

Punahou made it through a tough first week of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball season unscathed, holding off Kamehameha, 51-45, last night.
A crowd of about 500 at Kekuhaupi'o Gym watched the visiting Buffanblu improve to 2-0 and drop the Warriors to 0-2. Punahou opened its ILH schedule with a 65-47 victory over Saint Louis Thursday.
"This is huge for us, to get two tough wins out of the way early," said Buffanblu point guard Miah Ostrowski, who finished with a team-high 17 points. "But we can't celebrate; tomorrow's another day. We can't take any teams lightly in the ILH."
Kamehameha, which lost to six-time defending league champion 'Iolani in double-overtime Thursday, trailed for most of last night's game but held Ostrowski to two points in the first half and led, 23-22, early in the second half.
Ostrowski, though, warmed up with five points in the third period and had 10 in the fourth, which he began with a 3-pointer to put Punahou ahead, 37-29.
Rykin Enos' 3-pointer closed it to 40-37 with 5:01 remaining, but that was as close as the Warriors would get. After Enos cut it to 50-45 on two free throws with eight seconds left, Spencer McLachlin sealed it with a free throw two ticks later.
McLachlin, a 6-foot-7 forward, finished with 11 points, three rebounds, three blocks and two assists. Fellow forward Kameron Steinhoff added 14 points, two rebounds, two blocks and an assist.
"Their interior has always been a problem for us, because we don't match up with them well size-wise," Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "And Miah is the player he is; he stepped up in the crucial moments."
The Buffanblu also got a big lift from their bench, especially when the reserves combined for seven points and helped Punahou take a 22-18 lead into the locker room.
"Trevor Crabb (four points in second period) gave us a huge lift, and Dalton Hilliard (three points) gave us good defense," Buffanblu coach Dan Hale said. "Kamehameha is a tough, scrappy team and they really came at us."
Enos, a 6-foot guard, finished with 17 points to lead the Warriors.
