The Kalani and Kalaheo boys soccer teams played to a 3-3 tie yesterday, muddying the upper portion of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division standings.
Kalani (6-2-1) moved into a tie for first place with idle Roosevelt (6-1-1). Kaiser (5-2-1) and Moanalua (4-1-3) — which tied 1-1 yesterday — and the Mustangs (4-1-3) mathematically remain in contention for the East title, with two games remaining for most teams.
The Falcons took a 3-1 lead in the first half, behind two goals by senior forward Carter Kam, only to allow two second-half goals after some halftime adjustments by the Mustangs.
Kam scored the first goal in the fifth minute on a header off a corner kick by senior Andrew Harano from the right side.
"We work a lot on that in practice," Kam said. "I thought we could dominate most of the game after that because we were up."
Kalaheo responded four minutes later on a score by senior midfielder/forward Dylan Eichelberger on a through pass up the gut of the Kalani defense from freshman Joshua Amoroso.
Kam scored his second goal on a penalty kick into the right side of the goal in the 30th minute, and junior Jared Sasaki's goal two minutes before the half on a throw-in by Makana Wong gave the Falcons the 3-1 lead.
"The penalty kick took the wind out of our sails and I think we dropped our intensity at that point," Kalaheo coach John Nakagawa said.
The Mustangs changed their formation at half to a more offensive one, switching from four defenders, four midfielders and two forwards to three defenders, five midfielders and two forwards. After Nakagawa "implored the guys to step it up with intensity and quickness," they responded.
Nine minutes after the start of the second half, Eichelberger fed Amoroso up the left side of the field as the Mustangs closed to 3-2.
"I know where he's going to be and he knows where I'm going to be," Eichelberger said.
Kalaheo tied it at 3 on a goal by senior Tino Smiley, who dribbled from left to right across the field, beating at least two defenders, before slotting a low shot into the goal. The score came in the 65th minute.
"We just weren't as composed as the first half," Kalani's Kam said. "They were hitting long balls and we were just hitting them back."
Kalani coach Myles Arakawa said the Falcons rely on possession, which "is a form of defense for us," he said. "We're supposed to be a possession team, so we can't play ping-pong ball. They took us out of the game with the long balls."
