Arson suspected in 7-Eleven fire

The Honolulu Fire Department is investigating a two-alarm fire that occurred early yesterday at the Hau'ula 7-Eleven store at 54-132 Kamehameha Highway. There were no injuries.

Arson is suspected. Estimated damages were "at least $20,000," said HFD spokesman, Capt. Gar Lum.

Lum said some 30 firefighters fought the blaze. He said investigators are listing the incident as "incendiary," or "not accidental."

Lum said the alarm came in at 12:24 a.m. yesterday. The fire was under control within a half-hour, although firefighters remained at the scene for nearly two hours.




HONOLULU

LEARN DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

The Citizen Advisory Committee of the O'ahu Metropolitan Planning Organization will hold its monthly meeting starting at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 17 in the Mayor's Conference Room in Honolulu Hale, 530 S. King St.

The O'ahu Civil Defense agency will give a presentation on disaster preparedness.



MISSION CALLS FOR OLD CELL PHONES

The Aloha Medical Mission, a nonprofit organization that treats patients in poor countries, is recycling used and broken cell phones as a fundraiser this month.

The mission is working with Project Re-Cell and will receive $1 to $300 per phone, depending on the age and condition of the phone.

All money raised will go toward free healthcare to underserved people overseas and in Hawai'i.

Donate used or broken cell phones at one of three bins:

  • AMM Administration, 810 N. Vineyard Blvd.

  • Offices of Dr. Jorge Camara, 2226 Liliha St.

  • Offices of Ramon K. Sy, 1314 S. King St.



    TRANSIT CENTER OPINIONS SOUGHT

    Public input is being sought for the city's proposed development of the Alapa'i Joint Traffic Management Center and Bus Transit Center.

    A community meeting on the proposal will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Mission Memorial Auditorium, 550 S. King St., next to Honolulu Hale behind the Annex Building.

    The center would be built on the corner of Alapa'i and King streets.



    KOREAN ARRIVAL EVENT PLANNED

    Hawai'i will join states across the country in celebrating the arrival of Koreans in America with a commemorative ceremony from 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 13 at Pawa'a Park on King Street.

    The Korean American Foundation Hawai'i will host the free event, which will feature leading local Korean leaders and a performance by dancer Kim Mi Suk.




    KAUA'I

    FISH FOR TROUT EARLIER THIS YEAR

    The annual rainbow trout fishing season at the Koke'e Public Fishing Area on Kaua'i will start about two months earlier this year to accommodate the state's new public school vacation schedule, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources announced.

    The fishing season will begin on June 16. Fishing will be allowed between 5:30 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. until July 1.

    After that, fishing will only be allowed on Saturdays, Sundays and state holidays until July 29.

    Anglers must have a valid state freshwater game fishing license, which can be obtained at DLNR, fishing supply stores, licensed agents or purchased online at www.hawaii .gov/dlnr/dar/licenses.htm.



    LIABILITY ISSUES SHUT DOWN TRACK

    Unresolved permitting and liability issues have forced the temporary closure of the Wailua Motocross Track, Kaua'i county officials announced.

    A meeting has been scheduled between county officials and representatives of local motocross clubs to discuss the situation.

    "I apologize for any inconvenience this might cause, but it's imperative that these problems be taken care of," said Bernard Carvalho, director of the Kaua'i Offices of Community Assistance.
