Song Il Gook, Ha Ji Won and Han Hye-sook win top awards
By Jeff Chung
Every year around this time, I get calls from Korean drama fans asking when the acting awards shows will be televised.
Unfortunately, the networks don't give us the tapes until weeks after the shows have aired in South Korea. I hope one day KBFD will be able to televise more Korean programming in real time.
South Korea's three networks held their year-end acting awards ceremonies — each covering only its own shows — over the New Year's weekend. Here are the best-actor results.
MBC gave its top acting award to Song Il Gook for his role as Chumong in the period series "Chumong," which airs on KBFD.
The series was so popular that MBC extended the series to 60 episodes. The drama depicts the foundation of the Koguryo Kingdom (37 B.C.-A.D. 668) by the mythical Chumong.
Song Il Gook has a Hawai'i fan club of about 200 members. Last year, some of them traveled to South Korea and met with the actor, showering him with aloha gifts. The Hawai'i club hopes to invite the actor to the Islands for an event this fall, and has already started fundraising.
KBS' top acting award for 2006 went to Ha Ji Won for her role as the famous 16th-century kisaeng Hwang Jin-I in the period series of the same name. Kisaeng is similar to the Japanese geisha. The show has sparked a kisaeng boom in Korea, reviving Korean music and old Korean instruments. Ha Ji Won learned to play various instruments and perform dances of the period. "Hwang Jin-I" can be seen on KBS America.
Last October, Korean drama fans in Hawai'i got a chance to meet Ha Ji Won at the screening of her film "Duelist" at the Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival. In between filming episodes of "Hwang Jin-I," she flew in the morning of the opening press conference, stayed for two nights and left Saturday morning.
At Regal Dole Cannery 18 theaters, Ha Ji Won was met by a near-sold-out crowd that clapped as HIFF director Chuck Boller talked about her accomplishments in past dramas such as "Something Happened in Bali" and "Female Detective Damo." You can see Ha Ji Won's fan meeting blog at www.hiff.org.
SBS gave its top acting award to veteran actress Han Hye-sook for her role as Ji Young-sun in the popular series "Heaven," which was extended to more than 80 episodes. The show ran in South Korea from September 2005 to June 2006.
KBFD will run the series, but a schedule has not yet been set.
SBS and its executives will be in Hawai'i next month as sponsor for the first LPGA tournament of the year at Turtle Bay Resort.
