MILDRED ADELE McCARTER, 85, of Honolulu, died Dec. 24, 2006. Born in Englewood, N.J. Worked for the Department of Health in the chemistry laboratory, testing food for quality control. One of the three people who found the pesticide heptachlor in milk in the early 1980s; Mildred's 25th floor high-rise apartment burned and she perched on a window ledge for 17 minutes awaiting rescue in 1992. Survived by sister, Eleanor Mazzoleni; brothers, Lester and Bill Lichtler; nieces and nephews. Service noon Thursday at Mililani Downtown Mortuary.

ROBERT CARLOS MENDOZA, 53, of Honolulu, formerly of San Francisco, died Nov. 30, 2006. Born in Santa Monica, Calif. Maitre d' with Norwegian Cruise Line and restaurant manager in San Francisco.
