To open the O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball season last night, Moanalua got straight to the point.

Na Menehune took advantage of Kalaheo's weakness at point guard to rally past the visiting Mustangs, 54-48, in the league opener for both teams.

Moanalua guard Stevie Austin scored on three straight fast-break layups — the last two after making steals in Kalaheo's backcourt — to start the fourth period and turn a 36-32 deficit into a 38-36 lead.

Na Menehune would not trail again.

"I think that was the turning point of the game," said Austin, who finished with a team-high 15 points, three steals and one assist. "That gave us the momentum, and we wouldn't let it go."

Kalaheo again self-destructed in the fourth period with costly turnovers.

"It's the same things that killed us all preseason," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said. "We had a four-point lead, then in one minute and seven seconds we go from being up four to being two down. We turned the ball over on five straight possessions. Until this team learns to value the basketball and take care of it, we'll be in trouble."

Perennial contender Kalaheo, which plays defending OIA champion Kaimuki tomorrow, graduated three-year point guard Chris Tumaneng after last season and has been searching for a replacement with the same quickness and ball-handling skills.

Furtado said the current starter, 6-foot-2 Chase Moses, was not trained to play the point.

"Chase is trying his best, but I feel bad for him because he's playing out of position," Furtado said. "Coming into this season, I knew not having someone with point guard skills would be an issue, and it still is. We have size and we have athletes, but we're not processing the game mentally."

The Mustangs led 21-16 midway through the second period, but Moanalua finished the quarter with an 8-2 run to lead 24-23 at the break.

Kalaheo took the lead back toward the end of the third quarter on free throws by Deaux Burns and Cheynne Lishman, and Bruce Andrews came off the bench to sink a baseline jumper and make it 36-32 entering the fourth.

But then Austin made three straight baskets and Kris Lazarou came off the bench to sink two 3-pointers to push Na Menehune's lead to 44-38 midway through the period.

Lazarou, a 6-foot wing, scored all nine of his points in the final five minutes.

"Four games ago, Kris didn't even play at all," Moanalua coach Greg Tacon said. "But this is the third straight game he's played well. Now he's not afraid I'm going to take him out if he makes a mistake."

Lishman closed it to 51-46 on a layup with 44 seconds remaining, but Lazarou answered with a layup and Austin sealed the game with a free throw with 21 seconds remaining.
