A brushfire that burned more than 1,000 acres last week in an area above Lahaina has flared up again.
Two helicopters were dispatched to extinguish a small fire that was reported at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Darkness halted the water drops, but firefighters remained into the night to monitor the three-acre area that was still burning.
Yesterday, county fire crews and state forestry personnel responded to another flare-up that burned seven more acres of forest land.
Deputy Fire Chief Neal Bal said all-terrain vehicles were seen in the burned area, and he advised the public to stay out because of the danger from hot spots.
