GOING VEGAS
Casinos going down, houses up near Vegas

By Anthony Curtis

MGM Mirage intends to build a residential community on 166 acres it owns in Jean, Nev., 25 miles southwest of the city. The company will close Nevada Landing, one of Jean's two casinos, on April 18; the Gold Strike Casino, across I-15, also faces closure. The community will feature single-family houses and condominium and apartment buildings, some of which are earmarked for MGM Mirage employees. A locals' casino will also open in the mixed-use development; shuttles to jobs in Las Vegas are also planned. No time line or costs have been announced for the project.

SUPER SIGN-UP: The Stratosphere is running an excellent players club new-member signup program. Join the club and earn points to get a T-shirt, buffets, show tickets to American Superstars or Bite and even $100 in cash on a return visit. Getting to the first level requires playing quarter slots for about 15 minutes. This is an uncommonly good deal.

NEW SHOWS: As part of its conversion to Planet Hollywood, the Aladdin has announced the first two of what's expected to be a prolific show roster. "Stomp Out Loud," a new production from the creators of "Stomp," will open early April in a new $28 million theater. "Faster Than Magic" an illusion spectacular starring magician Hans Klok and Carmen Electra also will debut in April.
