Season 3 filming of "Lost" is in full swing, and the newest cast member spends her days on the set weaving through busy crew members, who reach down and rub her coarse, brown-and-black fur or give her a treat.

When the cameras are rolling, and "quiet on the set" is in full effect, she lies obediently — and silently — at the feet of the man who gave her a new life.

"Lost" executive producer and director Jack Bender adopted Ms. Honolulu, or "Lulu," as cast and crew members call her, from the Hawaiian Humane Society several months ago.

The 3-year-old Airedale-terrier mix is now a rising star, free to roam at will through one of the most secretive, restricted sets in filmdom.

"Lulu's been around," Bender said. "She knows all the secrets but won't tell anyone."

During a short break in filming Wednesday at The Advertiser's production plant in Kapolei, Bender described the Hawaiian Humane Society's facilities, which include a mini dog park, as the "Ritz-Carlton of humane societies."

He enjoyed the dog's company so much, he decided to bring her to work with him.

Every morning, Lulu travels with Bender and his assistant, Mary Dang, to the set of ABC's hit television show. Whether sitting under the shade of the director's tent or wandering around in search of a snack, she's never short of attention or affection.

"She's really good, she sits by our feet all the time," Dang said.

Show biz has been good to Lulu, who receives scratches behind her ears from Bender between takes and cheerful greetings from the crew.

Dang, who cares for Lulu off the set, said that the dog has become something of a set mascot.

"Everybody totally relates to her as a fixture," Bender said. "She's got a great life."

It wasn't always that way. A rule prohibiting animals on the set inspired Bender to add Lulu to the show's canine cast, where she joins yellow Labrador retriever "Vincent," a pet who survives the plane crash on the island.

As if having access to all the show's secrets and being spoiled by everyone on set isn't enough, Lulu also is scheduled to make an appearance in one of this season's upcoming episodes. Which one? Bender won't say.

But it's apparent that this previously "lost" islander has found her place. Watch out, Lassie.
