HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Man's body turns up at beach park

Advertiser Staff

The body of a 40-year-old man was recovered near the shoreline of Makapu'u Beach Park about 6:20 p.m. Friday.

The man's girlfriend notified authorities that the man was missing.

Police found the man's car parked in the lower parking lot near the Makapu'u lighthouse.

Patrol officers and firefighters combed the area looking for the man, and a police helicopter joined in the search.

The man's remains were eventually found near the shoreline.

Police said that during the search and recovery efforts, two large sharks were spotted in the area, leading to a decision by state Department of Land and Natural Resources officials to close the beach.

SEWAGE LEAKED AT WAHIKULI BEACH

LAHAINA — Several hundred thousand gallons of raw sewage spilled from a sewer line Thursday night and flowed into the ocean at Wahikuli Beach Park before the line could be patched, officials said.

The spill from a 21-inch-diameter pressurized pipe was reported Thursday by a resident who noticed sewage bubbling up through the ground at a little-used portion of the beach park, said Maui County wastewater division chief Dave Taylor.

Crews stopped the leak and made a temporary repair, Taylor said. The area affected was also cleaned up, he said.

The iron pipe, which had been installed in the 1970s and was scheduled to be replaced in 2011, had a hole 1 foot wide, Taylor said.

The exact amount of the leak is still being calculated by officials.

Maui County posted signs warning of the contamination at the beach park, which were expected to remain in place throughout the weekend, said Mike Tsuji, of the state Health Department's Clean Water Branch.
