The Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu is ordaining 17 deacons at 15 parishes. The ordinations began on Kaua'i in January and will be completed Feb. 10.

Permanent deacons are allowed to celebrate certain sacraments and help with priestly functions, including giving sermons.

BEAN THROWING FESTIVAL TODAY

Shinnyo En Hawaii is holding its Bean Throwing Festival at 10 a.m. today at the McCully area temple.

Setsubun, or Bean Throwing, is on the first day of spring on the lunar calendar. Roasted soy beans are thrown at a home with shouts of: "Oni wa soto!" (Get out demons!) and "Fuku wa uchi!" (Come in happiness!). Rituals are also held at temples and shrines.

ENERGY ISSUES TO BE DISCUSSED

The Interfaith Open Table will discuss "The Greening of Churches and Temples" with the Rev. David Turner at its next meeting, 7 a.m. Wednesday at Temple Emanu-El.

Turner, a United Church of Christ minister and former Punahou chaplain, is spearheading the formation of a Hawaii Interfaith Power and Light organization that deals with global warming and energy conservation issues.

Also, Lois Perrin, the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai'i, will discuss "My Faith Journey as an Activist."

JAZZ MASS TO END 3-DAY FESTIVAL

The world premiere of "The Gospel According to John Coltrane," a mix of jazz music in a sacred context, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church on Kaua'i.

The Jazz Mass will be the culmination of a three-day All Angels Jazz Festival that included concerts yesterday and today at 7:30 p.m. with Grammy-nominated musicians from Hawai'i and the Mainland. The musicians include Michael Ruff, Denny Morouse, Sistah' SHE and Picante, and composer/producer Paul English. English collaborated with the Rev. William Miller to include text by Coltrane and the four primary components of his spiritual classic, "A Love Supreme."

FREE SESSION OF LAUGHTER YOGA

Laughter Yoga has opened at 2241 Kapi'olani Blvd. It's on the sixth floor, and free sessions are at 7:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month. Laughter yoga is a worldwide social movement that aims to promote peace through laughter, based on the philosophy of "acting happy."
