Kapolei won its second straight game on penalty kicks to advance to the O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls soccer championship game for the first time.
"Cinderella, welcome to the ball," Hurricanes coach Brian Beck told his players after they defeated defending champ Mililani, 2-1, in Wednesday night's first semifinal at Moanalua High School.
"Mililani is a program we want to be like," said Beck, after guiding Kapolei to its first win over Mililani.
Kapolei (10-2-3), which joins its boys team in the championship game, plays Pearl City, a 1-0 winner over Kalani in overtime, on Saturday at Kapolei High School at 4 p.m.
"It's so overwhelming," Kapolei captain Chyanne Alejado said. "It still didn't hit me yet. We knew we were coming in as underdogs."
Alejado, Chaney Lopez, Kirsten Otsuka and Liana Gualdarama all made their kicks, and two Trojans shooters missed, for the 4-3 Kapolei advantage. Chelsey Goo, Breeanna Locquiao and Kristin Sagami made their kicks for Mililani.
"I think we had a little edge, being that we were in this one game ago," said Gualdarama, of beating Kaiser in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals.
Kapolei, Mililani (10-1-3), Kalani and Pearl City all qualified for next week's state tournament. Kaiser and the Moanalua-Castle winner earned the OIA's final two berths.
After a scoreless first half, Kapolei and Mililani scored within 10 minutes of each other.
Kapolei's Gualdarama, a sophomore midfielder who transferred from Maryknoll, shot a low, left-footed free kick from the right corner of the 18-yard box that made its way through the defense and past the goalkeeper in the 53rd minute.
Mililani sophomore forward Jackie Suan tied it 10 minutes later on a cross from junior midfielder Allison Kagawa. The play started on a punt by Mililani goalkeeper Joleen Realin that sailed way beyond the halfline. Suan touched it to Kagawa, who was running down the left sideline. Kagawa crossed it, and the ball bounced a few times in front of the goal before Suan volleyed it in.
"I don't think any one team was dominating in front of the goal," Mililani coach Ray Akiona said. "We were both trying to gain that one push through."
PEARL CITY 1, KALANI 0
Junior forward Meghan Fuller scored seven minutes into the first overtime as the Chargers defeated the Falcons, 1-0, in a rematch of one of last year's semifinal games, in which Kalani upset Pearl City.
"Because we remembered last year, we wanted to come out hard," Pearl City co-head coach Tracee Kono said. "And we've played flat in the semifinals before.
"For the kids, they remember last year and what it felt like, and they didn't want it to happen again."
Pearl City returned to the title game for the first time since the 2003 season.
Fuller, who led the OIA in goals scored in the regular season with 19, said last year's game wasn't really a factor, "but if it was it was in a good way. It kind of pushed us."
Fuller scored after junior Amy Tanaka threw the ball in about 10 feet from the endline to sophomore Kaitlyn Holt, who dribbled the ball to the left, near post of the goal and slotted the ball toward the goal. The Kalani goalkeeper fell on the ball but it slipped out of her grasp, and Fuller put it away.
