Alexander & Baldwin Foundation has presented University of Hawai'i President David McClain, UH-Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw and UH Foundation President and CEO Donna Vuchinich their final $25,000 check and fulfilled their $100,000 pledge to the Dan and Maggie Inouye Distinguished Chair in Democratic Ideals. The chair aims to improve understanding of the context of Hawai'i, Asia and the Pacific within the traditional positions of power and influence in the U.S.
The University of Hawai'i Foundation has awarded $500,000 to the UH-Manoa Department of Anthropology from the Henry Luce Foundation's Initiative on East and Southeast Asian Archeology and Early History. The funds will support the program "Building and Maintaining Asian Contacts: Enhancing Asian Archaeology, Training and Research at UHM."
The James & Abigail Campbell Foundation has awarded Hawai'i Nature Center a grant that will provide students with a day of exploration in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Honouliuli Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is home to several native species and is the site of the Nature Center's third-grade wetland program. The program teaches how plants and animals got to Hawai'i, how they've adapted and what can be done to protect island ecosystems.
The state Department of Human Services has awarded $250,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu to support the agency's mentoring services provided to at-risk children and youth in Honolulu.
The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific has received a number of major grants from the following foundations and individuals: Edith Leong in support of the Jack and Edith Leong Endowment for Charity Care, the Kosasa Foundation for general use, the American Board of Trial Advocates for the Think First injury prevention program, Schuyler E. Cole for the Beyond the Limit program, Na Hoa Laulima Gift Shop Rehabilitation Hospital Auxiliary toward the purchase of a new patient van, the Teresa F. Hughes Trust for charity care patients age 70-plus and the Bretzlaff Foundation Inc. for research, education and training.
Unrestricted donations came from: the Arthur and Louise Hanser Charitable Trust Fund (Ed and Grace Furukawa), the Jean and William K.H. Maui Foundation, Carole Lai in memory of Patrick Lai, Neal Kanda, Abigail Kawananakoa, The Hartley Foundation, the Webco Foundation and The World of Feng Shui Inc.
Generous proceeds were received from the 2007 REHAB Golf Tournament sponsored by First Hawaiian Bank Foundation and the 10th Annual AIG Joy of Food & Wine sponsored by AIG Hawaii and the third annual Young Artists Helping Young Artists chaired by Natalie Parker.
Sales continue of Eddie Sherman's book, "Frank, Sammy, Marlon and Me." Sherman and his wife, Patty, have donated hundreds of dollars in royalties so far to REHAB Hospital.
MADD-Hawai'i has received grants from The Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i through the Public Health Fund, Friends of Hawai'i Charities Inc. for youth programs to target and prevent underage drinking, and the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Inc. toward victim assistance services and MADD's overall mission to stop drunken driving.
Hawaiian Electric Co. has donated funds to the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Climate Change Commission. The money will be used to inventory the electricity, natural gas and transportation fuel purchased, airline miles traveled and to survey commuter travel by students, faculty and staff at Manoa and off-campus sites. Results will be registered in a new Honolulu Greenhouse Gas Registry to be established by the Commission.
