SKINS GAME AT KA'ANAPALI

For Island golf enthusiasts, there'll be one place to be Feb. 23-24: Ka'anapali, Maui, where the Wendy's Champions Skins Game will be played. Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Fuzzy Zoeller are expected to play, with Watson and Nicklaus defending their previous Skins titles. This 21st tournament is hopping across the island from Wailea, where it has been played for the past few years. Shelley Kekuna of the Ka'anapali Beach Resort Association notes that the 11 properties in the resort are clustered around the Royal Ka'anapali (North) Course, so visitors will have great access to the Robert Trent Jones-designed venue. HILO ORCHID SHOW AND SALE

If orchids are your thing, a jaunt to the Big Island will be in order in August, when the 56th annual Hilo Orchid Society Show and Sale takes place. A private wine-and-cheese preview benefit for Hospice of Hilo opens the action on Aug. 7 followed by three days of displays, demonstrations and sales Aug. 8-10 at the Edith Kanaka'ole Multi-Purpose Stadium in Hilo. Admission is just $4 (a donation) at the door, so you can save some bucks for staying in a special spot (such as the Waianuhea luxury inn or the Palms Cliff House Bed & Breakfast Inn, both on the Hamakua Coast just a few minutes out of Hilo. NAPA VALLEY MUSTARD FESTIVAL

When the saffron fields of wild mustard are in bloom, Napa, Calif., is in the mood for fun, with the annual Napa Valley Mustard Festival, celebrating the wine country with food and wine events, art exhibitions, entertainment and cultural activities. The 15th annual event will happen Feb. 2 to March 29. The signature event, The Marketplace, celebrating mustard-based culinary artistry, will be March 15-16 at COPIA, the American Center for Wine, Food & the Arts. Many other events are involved, from black-tie dinners to tableaux vivants of works by the European masters.
