Dorsey rallies past 'Iolani, 59-54

BRISTOL, Tenn. — The Dorsey (Calif.) Dons used a late defensive stand to hold off 'Iolani, 59-54, yesterday in the 25th annual Arby's Classic.

With crisp execution of its disciplined offense, 'Iolani had forged a 42-34 advantage late in third quarter. However, Dorsey stepped up the defensive pressure to outscore the Raiders 25-12 in the last 10 minutes.

"We can't finish a game off, that's been our problem all year," said 'Iolani head coach Mark Mugiishi. "We keep telling our team that we need to get to the foul line late in the game but we never do it."

Dorsey's Nigel Carter, a Division-I prospect, scored a game-high 25 points on 11 of 12 shooting from the field. He added nine rebounds, and made several key buckets in the final period.

"Until we made a bucket with about 10 seconds left, we had gone three minutes without scoring," noted Mugiishi. "Their big man (Carter) took over and our only counter was to get to the line and we didn't do it."

Taylor Mounts led 'Iolani with 14 points and Pablo Warner added 11. Trevyn Tulonghari contributed nine points, and Berton Wong and Lionel Fujioka each had five.

The game was a back-and-forth affair early that saw five lead changes and nine ties in the first half. Dorsey broke from the 11th and final tie of the game with its late-game surge.

'Iolani opened the tournament Thursday with a loss to Father Henry Carr of Ontario, Canada before winning a losers' bracket game over Sullivan East (Tenn.) on Friday.

The loss to Dorsey ends 'Iolani's appearance in the tournament, but Mugiishi likes what playing in the prestigious event has done for his squad.

"One thing is it has shown us our deficiencies," Mugiishi said. "It's also shown us that we can play with a lot of guys and although we're not able to finish games right now, hopefully our kids understand the game of basketball better and it will help us during the rest of our season."
