The Hawaii Medical Service Association Foundation board of directors has approved six grants to community organizations and health programs. They are:
The Association of Native Hawaiian Physicians for disease prevention services; First Chinese Church of Christ Pre-School equipment for the school's physical education program; Goodwill Industries of Hawaii for its Child Watch Program for children of parent-participants; Hawaii Primary Care Association for its annual conference; Lanakila Rehabilitation Center Inc. for Meals on Wheels; and the University of Hawai'i Telehealth Research Institute for a conference.
The Life Foundation recently received grants from: the Office of Minority Health to target minority groups on Leeward O'ahu and among the homeless; the U.S. Conference of Mayors for prevention efforts among Native Americans; McInerny Foundation, G.N. Wilcox Trust and MAC AIDS Fund to help clients maintain their medication schedules; Hawaii Community Foundation, Kaiser Permanente and Macy's West Passport Fund, to address the special needs of the mentally ill who have AIDS; Until There's a Cure Foundation in support of the No Shame Campaign; Abbott Laboratories in support of education forums on HIV care and medications; and Safeway Foundation to foster good nutrition that supports a healthy immune system.
Kahumana Community Center has been given a grant of $10,000 by First Hawaiian Bank Foundation. The money will be used to purchase new furnishings for its residential facilities. The center is dedicated to educational, cultural and socioeconomic renewal through community building.
The Queen's Medical Center recently received a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The grant will fund an educational program developed by the medical center and Stevenson Middle School to foster interest in science and healthcare among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students. The goal of the grant is to address the under-representation of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in healthcare professions by providing students in-depth science education during the critical middle school years.
