Hawai'i's last chance in 10 tries to notch a boys basketball victory against a top Mainland opponent in the 24th Annual 'Iolani Prep Classic slipped away in the fourth period of the host team's 55-41 loss to Mason County (Maysville, Ky.) yesterday.

The nationally renowned tournament, which featured four teams ranked in USA Today's latest Super 25 released Monday, wrapped up last night with Hawai'i going winless in 10 games against Mainland opponents during the week.

'Iolani played Mason County, the preseason No. 1-ranked team in Kentucky by a coaches poll in the Lexington Herald, even for almost three periods. But Russ Middleton's layup with 1:30 remaining in the third quarter broke a 30-30 tie, and University of Kentucky-bound forward Darius Miller made a steal and 10-foot jumper at the buzzer to put the Royals up 34-30.

Miller opened the fourth period with another steal and a two-handed slam dunk, then hit a 12-foot baseline jumper to make it 38-30 with 6:11 left.

"We got a couple turnovers in that stretch that led to easy baskets, and that helped because we didn't get many easy baskets before that," Mason County coach Chris O'Hearn said. "We were hoping to surprise them with the halfcourt trap, and Darius took over late in the game."

The Royals opened the lead to 47-37 midway through the fourth quarter, but a putback by Taylor Mounts and Berton Wong's 15-foot jumper from the right wing closed it to 47-41 with 1:55 remaining.

But that would end the Raiders' scoring for the night, as Ethan King made a layup with 1:27 left and Mason County converted all six of its free-throw attempts in the final 37 seconds.

"We played them tough for most of the game, but we had just enough lapses to cost us in the end," 'Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "But that's what I love about this tournament — we slowly get better every night."

Miller, a quick and athletic 6-foot-7 senior, finished with a game-high 22 points and had five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Middleton added 13 points and Trevor Setty 12.

Mounts led the Raiders with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Marquette-bound guard Nick Williams scored a game-high 15 points and junior DeMarcus Cousins added 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks to help LeFlore (Mobile, Ala.) win the White Division title.

LeFlore, ranked No. 14 in USA Today's Super 25, was the 2006 Classic champ. This year's tournament was broken up into two divisions.

Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.) entered the tournament ranked No. 6 by USA Today, but lost twice in the past three days.
