Barriers installed to stem stream overflow

One week after an inspection of Kaluanui Stream by Sen. Clayton Hee and others, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources took action to reduce overflow of the Hau'ula waterway during heavy rain.
Concrete barriers were installed Wednesday along the most problematic bank where water spills out and heads straight for homes nearby. The stream at Sacred Falls Park has begun to change course and is cutting a path toward the homes, but the new route abruptly ends, forcing any water flowing there to spill over the stream bank.
The barriers were "doubled up" where the main flow poses the worst threat, and rebar was used to reinforce the structures, said Eric Hirano, DLNR chief engineer. The barriers aren't expected to hold back a huge storm, but they should lessen the flooding impact, Hirano said in an e-mail.
The cost to haul the barriers to the site and install them was $32,000, which will come from a 2006 emergency disaster fund.
