Malulani sells building for $15.8M

Honolulu-based real estate investment and development firm Malulani Investments Ltd. said it has sold a 115,000-square-foot industrial building in Dallas for $15.8 million.

The company said the sale was part of a portfolio of buildings bought on the Mainland beginning in 1997. The firm also sold the 252,000-square-foot West Maui Center retail complex earlier this year.

Malulani's portfolio includes industrial, retail and residential property in Hawai'i, California, Texas, Indiana and North Carolina, as well as California's 21,349-acre Langtry Estate & Vineyards.


BANK EMPLOYEES PLEDGE $578,000

First Hawaiian Bank has completed its workplace charitable giving campaign with employees pledging $578,000.

The inaugural effort, called Kokua Mai, which in Hawaiian means "to help others," will directly benefit 25 local charities in Hawai'i, Guam and Saipan, including the United Way organizations statewide, according to Don Horner, First Hawaiian president and chief executive officer.

"I am extremely proud of our employees and retirees for their caring spirit," Horner said. "The level of giving and participation by the First Hawaiian 'ohana is a tangible expression of the aloha that the employees have for their communities."


3 IN BIG ISLAND TOURISM HONORED

The Big Island Visitors Bureau announced the winners of its Aikane Awards during its annual luncheon yesterday.

The awards are designed to recognize individuals and/or entities for their contributions to the island's visitor industry.

This years recipients are:

  • William "Uncle Billy" Kimi Jr., owner and founder of Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay Hotel and Uncle Billy's Kona Bay Hotel.

  • Frank Kamahele, former district manager of the Hilo and Kona airports.

  • Carl Hayashi, Japan Airlines' Kona station manager.


    SIMPLIFYING HOLIDAY GIFT-GIVING

    Groups hoping to encourage more green holidays and less commercialism are sponsoring the Green Market Gift Fair from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow at Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave.

    The event includes ways to simplify the holiday "by giving gifts that give back to our community and environment while reclaiming traditions of the past, saving money, decreasing holiday stress and trash."

    Native plants will be for sale, as well as items like reusable grocery totes and biodegradable party supplies. There will be demonstrations, such as how to make rain-barrel catchments for your garden and green cleaning supplies for your home.


    VENTURE CAPITAL UP FOR DISCUSSION

    The Hawaii Science & Technology Council will hold a venture capital panel discussion from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Kahala Hotel and Resort.

    The "2007 Venture Capital Summit: Investing in Hawai'i's Future" will include venture capitalists, industry CEOs, institutional investors and fund managers. The keynote speaker will be William Harris, former director general of the Science Foundation, who will discuss "A Case Study in Economic Performance: Ireland, Lessons for Hawai'i."
