Harbor wall repairs started
Advertiser Staff
The bulkhead wall at Kalaupapa Harbor is undergoing emergency repairs — it was determined it could not withstand another season of winter waves.
The wall protects a warehouse at the edge of the harbor, which was built in 1967 to serve the former Hansen's disease settlement. The 30 residents, 41 Department of Health workers, 42 National Park Service employees and three state Department of Transportation employees who live in Kalaupapa rely on twice-a-year shipments of supplies that come into the harbor.
Gov. Linda Lingle released $595,000 for the repairs, which are expected to be completed next month.
