U.S. men capture America's Cup

Honolulu's Clay Stanley had 23 points, including 20 kills, to lead the United States men's national volleyball team over Brazil, 25-16, 25-23, 19-25, 21-25, 19-17, to retain its America's Cup title yesterday in Manaus, Brazil.

Stanley, a Kaiser High and University of Hawai'i alum, also had two blocks and an ace.

The U.S. men will return to action Sept. 16 to 22 at the NORCECA Continental Championship in Anaheim, Calif.

U.S. WOMEN BEATEN

The Netherlands beat the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team 25-18, 25-23, 11-25, 25-20 yesterday on the final day of preliminary action in the FIVB World Grand Prix at the Macau Forum in Macau, China.

University of Hawai'i alum Heather Bown had 10 points on eight kills, one block and one ace, and Robyn Ah Mow-Santos , another UH alum, had 56 assists, one kill and five digs.

CLINIC DATES, TIMES

The Extreme Fitness Club will hold youth volleyball clinics from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30 at various locations in Honolulu.

Former University of Hawai'i players Tanya Fuamatu Anderson and Lauren Duggins are part of the clinic staff.

The clinics will be divided into two age groups for boys and girls: 6 to 9 and ages 10 to 14. Clinics will be three times per week and participants may attend as many clinics as they want.

The cost is $325 for ages 6 to 9 and $475 for ages 10 to 14. Registration deadline is Aug. 30.

Wednesdays: At Palama Gym, 6 to 7:15 p.m. for ages 6 to 9; 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. for ages 10 to 14. Fridays: At Word of Life Gym, 6 to 7:15 p.m. for ages 6 to 9; 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. for ages 10 to 14. Saturdays: Boys & Girls Club of Hawai'i, Spalding location, 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. for ages 10 to 14; 9:30 a.m. for ages 6 to 9.

HAWAI'I FINISHES 10TH

Hawai'i finished in 10th place at the 39th Eddie Hogan Cup Team Matches yesterday in Portland, Ore. Hawai'i finished with a combined score of 29-over-par 461 at the Riverside Golf & Country Club.

Southern California won the team title at 1-over, 433. Jeffrey Kang of Fullerton, Calif., won the individual title at 3-under 141.

David Fink of Kailua was the top Hawai'i finisher, tying for 16th at 6-over 150.

Other Hawai'i golfers: Alex Chu (tied for 30th, 155); Pono Calip, Oahoa (tied for 35th, 157); and Cory Oride (tied for 37th, 158).

FOUR EARN HONORS

Four University of Hawai'i women's soccer players have been named to the 11-player preseason all-Western Athletic Conference team. Forward Taryn Fukuroku, midfielder Jessica Domingo, defender Koren Takeyama and goalkeeper Kori Lu were selected to the squad.

Fukuroku was a first-team all-WAC selection, and Domingo and Takeyama earned second-team all-WAC honors last year.

San Jose State midfielder Nicole Irwin is the preseason Offensive Player of the Year, and Lindsey Smart (Utah State) and Jessica Wilcox (Nevada) are preseason Defensive Co-Players of the Year.

Hawai'i was picked to finish fifth in the eight-member conference, receiving 32 points in a coaches poll.

Nevada was picked to win the conference, earning four of eight first-places votes and 45 points

The Rainbow Wahine open the season Aug. 31 against Kansas in the Ohana Hotels & Resorts No Ka 'Oi tournament.


RUNNING

IACOVELLI, KUSUTANI WIN

Todd Iacovelli was the top overall male finisher and Sayuri Kusutani was the top overall female yesterday in the Norman Tamanaha Memorial 15K at Kapi'olani Park.

Iacovelli finished in 51 minutes 42.3 seconds and Kusutani in 58:58.7.
