U.S. gets volleyball bronze

The United States defeated Italy 25-15, 25-22, 25-16 in the men's volleyball bronze medal game yesterday at the World University Games at Thammasat University outside Bangkok, Thailand.
Turkey beat Canada 25-11, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21 in the men's volleyball gold medal final.
Evan Patak led the Americans with 12 points. Former University of Hawai'i All-American Alfred Reft was the starting libero for the U.S.
STANLEY LEADS U.S. MEN
Honolulu's Clay Stanley had 10 points as the U.S. Men's Volleyball Team remained undefeated at the America's Cup yesterday with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-20) victory over Cuba in a semifinal match in Manaus, Brazil.
Team USA will face Brazil for the gold in the final today.
U.S. WOMEN BEAT CUBA
University of Hawai'i alum Heather Bown had five blocks, four kills and two aces to help the United States women's national team to an 18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 15-13 victory over Cuba in pool play of the FIVB World Grand Prix yesterday at the Macau Forum in Macau, China.
Setter Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, another UH alum, had one block and 42 assists.
The United States (5-3) plays the Netherlands (5-3) in the final day of pool play today.

HAWAI'I 10TH AT HOGAN
Hawai'i stood in 10th place after the first round of the 39th Eddie Hogan Cup Team Matches yesterday at Portland, Ore.
Hawai'i shot a combined score of 233 at the par-72, 6,667-yard Riverside Country Club. Southern California leads the 12-team event at 212.
Jeffrey Kang of Fullerton, Calif., held the individual lead at 4-under 68.
David Fink of Kailua was tied for eighth at 2-over 74 followed by Alex Chu of Honolulu (tie 31st, 79), Pono Calip of Pahoa, Hawai'i (tie 34th, 80) and Cory Oride of Lihu'e, Kaua'i (tie 42nd, 82).
The 36-hole event pits the best junior golfers from the Western United States and Canada against each other in a team format with the three lowest scores each day determining the team total.
