Turtle Bay Resort's Palmer Course will be the site of the Aloha Section PGA's third major of the year, the Turtle Bay Golf Match Play Championship, Monday through Wednesday.

GolfTec's John Lynch won last year, 1-up over Mark Morrison. Mike Rich captured the seniors, 4 and 2, over Dugal Milne. The tournament has a $13,800 purse, with $8,800 to the champion and $4,000 to the senior winner.

Lynch and Rich will be seeded first in Monday's first round, which begins at 7 a.m. The second round follows at noon. Quarterfinals and semifinals are Tuesday, with Wednesday's final beginning at 7 a.m.

A consolation round, for first- and second-round losers, will be held Tuesday at Turtle Bay's Fazio Course.

PATRIOT GOLF DAY

The inaugural Patriot Golf Day, a joint initiative of the PGA of America and U.S. Golf Association, will be Sept. 1 at golf facilities nationally.

That day, public courses will ask golfers to donate an extra dollar and private courses will ask for donations. Funds will support families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of duty.

Hawai'i courses participating are: Pearl Country Club, Turtle Bay Resort, Kaua'i Lagoons, Ko Olina, Makena, Po'ipu Bay, Kapalua Golf Academy, Puakea, Princeville, Mililani and Kahili.

PGA pro Dan Rooney, who is also an F-16 pilot for the Oklahoma Air National Guard, is spearheading the program to raise funds through Wounded Warriors, Inc. Rooney is also establishing The Fallen Heroes Foundation to pay for the education of children who have lost a parent in Iraq or Afghanistan.

HAWAI'I-JAPAN JUNIORS

Qualification for the inaugural USA Hawai'i-Japan Junior Cup will be based on points accumulated in junior tournaments since Jan. 1 for Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association members.

The tournament will feature 36 golfers on the two teams, ages 13 to 18, participating in a Ryder Cup format. This first event will be played at Waikoloa's Kings' Course, Nov. 7 to 11.

Players currently at the top of the HSJGA point standings include Tamara Surtees, Britney Yada, TJ Kua and Bradley Shigezawa. The Japan High School Golf Association will base its qualifiers on two tournaments this month — the Japan High School Championship and Japan Junior Golf Championship.

The Cup is intended to become an annual fundraising event and alternate between here and Japan after opening on the Big Island the first two years. Tournament sponsors include Hilton Grand Vacations, Koyo USA Corp., Hawai'i Deep Sea Water, Group 70 International, Title Guaranty of Hawai'i and Grand Illusion Painting.

NOTES

Reyn Tanaka was the only golfer to shoot par when he won last weekend's Amatour Hawai'i Battle at Kane'ohe Klipper by one shot over Blaine Kimura. Tanaka and Kimura both shot 2-under-par 70 in the first round. Tanaka closed with a 74 while Kimura shot 75. Mike Kawate was third at 73—147. The next event is The Olomana Shootout, Sept. 8 and 9.

The Big Island's Makelei Golf Club will have two events this month to support local schools. The club is hosting a school supply donation drive for Kealakehe Elementary all month. Those who donate $5 receive a discount on merchandise of up to 40 percent. The second annual WaveRider Open will be Saturday and will benefit the students of Kealakehe High School. To enter a team, call James Young, 327-4300, ext. 206.

The third stop on the Aloha Section PGA Foundation/Castle Resorts & Hotels University of Hawai'i Scholarship Pro-Am Series will be Aug. 31 at Turtle Bay. The series supports the scholarship program for UH golf. Format is one net/one gross best ball with four amateurs and one pro. Contact the section for more information at 593-2230.

Entries are still being accepted for the 12th annual Lanakila Tournament, Aug. 31, at Hawai'i Prince. The three-person scramble is the single largest fundraiser for Lanakila Meals on Wheels, which provides fresh daily hot meals for the elderly in need. The regular 18-hole event has a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m., while the new nine-hole event begins at 2:30 p.m. For information, contact Marlena at 356-8533 or mwillette@lanakilahawaii.org.
