After almost four years the name changeover from Aladdin to Planet Hollywood is official. Several celebrities were on hand at the christening to validate the new Hollywood-glitz focus of the resort, which is expected to compete directly with the Hard Rock, Palms, Mandalay Bay, Rio and, eventually, a remodeled Sahara for the hip-and-cool crowd. The transformation is complete in name only, however, as construction continues on the front of the property, which is being reconfigured and outfitted with billboards. The official grand-opening of Planet Hollywood is set for September.
ANOTHER TRANSFORMATION: A new nightclub from the Light Group called Diablo's Cantina has been announced for the Monte Carlo. The press release for Diablo's states that the club "marks the beginning of a Monte Carlo transformation." They just keep comin'!
STOMPING: Accompanying the new name was the opening of the new show, "Stomp Out Loud" at Planet Hollywood. Seats begin at $50; the best seats go for $110.
SILVERTON SPECIAL: Silverton, the casino located off I-15 on the far south end of Las Vegas, has two excellent 24-hour specials: a 7-ounce steak and eggs for $4.99 and the same steak with fried shrimp for $8.99. The specials are served in the Sundance Grill coffee shop.
Q. Which casinos deal single-deck blackjack that pays 3-2 for naturals? It seems like every single-deck game in town now pays only 6-5.
Downtown's El Cortez was recently named "best place to play blackjack" in the annual "Best of Las Vegas" survey, specifically because it pays 3-2 on its single decks. The Four Queens also deals "old-fashioned" single decks that pay 3-2.
