Hawai'i golfers took three of the six spots on the all-Northwest Conference women's team.

Puget Sound (Wash.) senior Emily Lau ('Iolani '03), Willamette sophomore Whitney Ueno (Hilo '05) and Pacific freshman Jasmine Ching (Waiakea '06 of Hilo) finished in the top six of the NWC Championships at the par-72, 5,800-yard Aspen Lakes Golf Course in Sisters, Ore.

Lau (78-85—163) and Ueno (84-79—163) tied for second; Ching was fifth (94-81—175).

Lau was named the NWC Women's Golfer of the Week April 2.

MORE WOMEN'S GOLF

  • Portland State sophomore Kayla Morinaga (Sacred Hearts '05 of Waipahu) was named to the Big Sky Conference second team, after earning a conference ranking of 411 (the Big Sky used rankings for Golf Week to determine its All-Conference team and individual award winners).

  • Idaho State freshman Brittany Austin (Campbell '06) tied for 16th at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic April 9 and 10.

    Her three-round total was 82-84-74— 240. Her final round 74 was the lowest round of any Bengal this season.

  • Long Island senior Erica Chong (Hilo '03) was the team's low finisher after tying for 19th at the Longwood Invitational April 3. Chong shot 77-86-80—243.

  • Santa Clara freshman Jamie Nonaka (Punahou '06) has an 81.69 stroke average this season. Her best finish was a tie for 16th with 80-80—160 in the Lady Braveheart Challenge Feb. 12 and 13.

    BASEBALL

  • Cal State Northridge junior catcher Jowen-James Murray-Thornton (Saint Louis '04) is tied for second on the team with a .294 batting average. He has 25 hits, nine runs, four doubles and 11 RBIs.

    Senior shortstop Jonathan Sakurai ('Aiea '03) has a .287 batting average and is second on the team with 43 hits. He has six doubles and 14 RBIs.

  • Grinnell College (Iowa) freshman outfielder/third baseman Chad Takabuki (Mid-Pacific '06) is third on the team in batting average (.371) and hits (23) and leads the team in runs (24). He has four doubles and eight RBIs, starting 19 games for Grinnell (10-10).

  • Rochester (N.Y.) freshman infielder Blayne Fuke (Mid-Pacific '06 of Kane'ohe) started all 19 games, with a .269 batting average. He tallied 18 hits, 14 runs and three RBIs.

    Fuke hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 12th inning in a 7-6 win over Skidmore College March 25.

  • Lewis & Clark (Ore.) junior infielder Jordan Shibata ('Aiea '04) is second on the team with a .330 batting average and 33 hits. He also has six doubles and 11 RBIs.

  • Graceland (Iowa) senior infielder Aaron Fuller (Kamehameha '02) went 4 for 5 with three runs and an RBI in a doubleheader against No. 23 William Jewell College April 11.

  • Central Arizona freshman outfielder Christian Johnson ('Iolani '06) batted 3 for 8 in a doubleheader against Cochise College on Saturday. He was 1 for 3 in Game 1, a 6-2 loss, and went 2 for 5 with a triple, two RBIs and a run in a 7-3 win in Game 2.

    Yesterday, Johnson went 5 for 6 in a doubleheader split against Yavapai, driving in the go-ahead run in an 8-5 win in the first game, when he went 3 for 4.

  • South Mountain Community College (Phoenix) freshman right-handed pitcher/outfielder Cameron Bayne (Saint Louis '06) leads the team in batting average (.390) and runs (15) for players with 20 or more at-bats.

    He has a 1-1 record in three pitching appearances with a 3.86 ERA, 11 strikeouts and two walks.

  • Cal State Stanislaus senior right-hand pitcher Jason Peters (Kaiser '02) has the 12th best earned-run average in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

    Peters has a 3.95 ERA, with an 2-4 record in 11 appearances. He has two complete games with 33 strikeouts and 15 walks in 57 innings.

    WOMEN'S TENNIS

  • UC Irvine junior Jessica Broadfoot (Punahou '04) and sophomore Heidi Kaloi (Kamehameha '05) top the team in wins this season. Broadfoot is 16-6 and Kaloi is 15-6. Together, they are 11-6 in dual-match doubles.

    Broadfoot beat Ana Matijasevic, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 4 slot and Kaloi defeated Kasia Krasinska, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 5 match against Cal State Northridge on Saturday.

  • Azusa Pacific freshman Jessalyn Lau (Hawai'i Baptist '06) is 12-5 in singles (7-2 at No. 5) and a combined 4-1 in doubles (3-1 at No. 3 with Lindsey Cloninger).

    In a recent trip to Hawai'i, a match against Brigham Young-Hawai'i was rained out and APU lost to the University of Hawai'i, 6-1. Lau lost her No. 5 singles match.

    ROWING

  • Southern California sophomore Denise Kobashikawa (Maryknoll '05) led the JV Eight crew to a sweep of all three races at the Charles River Challenge this past weekend.

    Kobashikawa, the coxswain, and crew finished first in 7:50.20, 7:17.20 and 6:51.30.

    SOFTBALL

  • Menlo (Atherton, Calif.) freshman second baseman Alisha Vegas (Kailua '06) leads the team with 10 doubles and 19 RBIs. She is batting .263 in 76 plate appearances.

    Sophomore catcher/third baseman Ku'ulei Padeken (University High '05) is batting .162, with eight runs, 11 hits and seven RBIs.

    MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • Vassar senior outside hitter Wayne Coito (Kamehameha '01 of Mililani) tallied a career-high 11 kills in the final game of his career in a 30-27, 32-34, 28-30, 23-30 loss to Sacred Heart on April 3.

    ACADEMICS

  • East Carolina freshmen Cristen Aona (Punahou '06), Charina Sumner (Punahou '06) and Kaui Tom (Kamehameha '06) each earned a spot on the Conference USA's Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2006-07 academic year.

  • Five athletes from Hawai'i were named to the Menlo Fall 2006 Dean's List.

    Women's basketball players Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04) and Kelci Fushikoshi (Lahainaluna '05), soccer players Lauren Maeshiro (Pearl City '06) and Adrianna Kinhult (Kaiser '06) and volleyball player Christa Hewett (Kamehameha '04) earned the distinction.

    COMMITMENTS

  • Punahou forward/midfielder Nick Love signed with the Gonzaga men's soccer program. Love, a two-time Advertiser All-State first-team selection, joins fellow Hawai'i players Vito Higgins (Academy of the Pacific '03 of Kailua), Daniel Scott (King Kekaulike of Ha'iku) and Tye Perdido (Seabury Hall '06 of Kula) on the Bulldogs' roster.

  • Tierra-Lyn Cuba of Mililani joins Sasha Koki and Jandee Taira of St. Francis to sign with the Western Oregon softball program.

    Cuba and Koki were both Advertiser All-State first-team picks and Taira was named to the second team.

    CORRECTION

  • Tiffany Taylor (Punahou '01) is a full-time assistant coach for the women's soccer team at Bucknell (Pa.). The wrong information was included in a previous Homegrown Report.
