It's been a long road that Bob Nash has traveled, a long wait to come to this high point in his basketball career.

And judging by the clamoring from the stands — the crowd was chanting "We Want Nash" at that final game last month — the fans have been waiting for this moment, too: Bob Nash has taken over as head coach of the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team.

This, the 56-year-old veteran said to delighted applause, is the only job he's ever wanted.

Nash's name is one of the first that come to mind when the subject of UH basketball is raised. That's because his history with the team dates back so far and had such a stellar beginning.

As a player, Nash was part of the memorable "Fabulous Five" in the 1970-71 and 1971-72 seasons. In addition to his contribution to the team's 47-8 record, Nash retains the school record for most rebounds in a game: 30 were tallied against Arizona State, Dec. 30, 1971. His record of 361 rebounds in 1971-72 still stands as the best for a single season at UH. Nobody who remembers those exciting years can forget Bob Nash.

But the dedication to the team has continued through the decades. Nash served as assistant coach under three head coaches: Larry Little, Frank Arnold, and Riley Wallace; he's been associate head coach since Wallace took the helm in 1987.

The fans had the extra thrill of seeing the next generation — son Bobby — on the Stan Sheriff Center court as well. Is it any wonder that Nash was viewed as the hometown favorite for the top job once Wallace stepped down?

Certainly, athletic director Herman Frazier wanted to make a thorough search for a replacement; it only adds credibility to Nash's ultimate appointment as the most qualified candidate, as well as the Isles' "favored son." But it's gratifying that the choice was made in time for Nash to begin making his mark in recruitment.

Now everyone can wish Coach Nash a first season worthy of one of our Fab Five.
