MA'ALAEA
Speeding boat making pit stop
Advertiser Staff
The biodiesel-powered speedboat Earthrace is expected to make a brief stop at Ma'alaea today before continuing on its around-the-world speed-record attempt.
The 78-foot vessel's unique wave-piercing hull design allows it to submarine through ocean swells.
Earthrace started its voyage March 10 in Barbados and is speeding to Hawai'i from San Diego, where it underwent repairs after a boat collision off Guatemala. The vessel is expected to reach Ma'alaea sometime between noon and 6 p.m. today, staying only a few hours before setting off for Micronesia. The nonprofit Earthrace effort aims to raise awareness about global conservation.
