Advertiser Staff

No. 4 Hawai'i rolled out to an early lead then held on for a 7-6 victory over No. 12 UC Santa Barbara yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo match at Santa Barbara, Calif.

Hawai'i is 12-8 overall and 8-3 in the MPSF. Santa Barbara is 13-15 and 2-6.

Kelly Mason scored three goals — all in the first half — to help UH to a 4-1 lead. UH led 6-3 after three quarters.

Lisa Van Raalte scored off a fast break to give UH a 7-3 lead two minutes into the fourth period. The Gauchos scored three unanswered goals, but the last shot of the game — a sweep shot by Sarah Kovach — missed by inches, preserving UH's victory.

Brittany Dames, Amy Logan, Angela Turnbull and Lisa van Raalte also scored for the Rainbow Wahine. UH goalie Meike De Nooy made 15 saves.

Hawai'i plays at Cal State Northridge tomorrow for its final MPSF regular-season match.

TENNIS

UH SWEEPS AZUSA

Both University of Hawai'i teams defeated NAIA power Azusa Pacific on Monday at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Rainbow men broke the Cougars' 20-match win streak with a 4-3 victory. The Rainbow Wahine snapped their own five-match skid with a 6-1 win.

Azusa Pacific was ranked second among NAIA men and fifth in the women's poll.

The Rainbow Wahine (5-15) won all three doubles for the first point, then captured five of six singles matches, taking all but one in straight sets. Julia Hodes, a freshman playing No. 1 for the Rainbow Wahine, won her match in a third-set "super tiebreaker" after winning the first set (6-2) and losing the second (4-6).

The Rainbow Wahine play Brigham Young-Hawai'i — the top-ranked NCAA Division II team — today before heading to the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Boise, Idaho.

The UH men (6-10) have won their last two. They earned the doubles point Monday, with Andreas Weber and Sascha Heinemann — Nos. 1 and 2 — clinching it with a 9-7 victory. Both also won their singles matches and Chad Faulk's straight-set victory at No. 3 earned the win.

Hawai'i's final regular-season match is also against BYUH, next Wednesday. The WAC men's championship is April 26 to 29 at Boise.
