Kimberly Kim wins Farr golf tourney

Advertiser Staff

Former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim shot a final-round 3-under-par 68 yesterday to capture the girls division of the Rebath Heather Farr Classic in Mesa, Ariz.

Kim, who now resides in Queen Creek, Ariz., finished the American Junior Golf Association tournament with a 54-hole total of 209 at the Longbow Golf Club to win by four strokes. The ninth annual tournament featured 90 boys and 42 girls — ages 12 to 18 — from 17 states, Canada, the Cayman Islands and Mexico.

Kim, 15, birdied No. 9 to make the turn at even-par 36, then made four birdies and a bogey on the back nine.

"I wasn't thinking straight to start the day," Kim said. "It took me until the back nine to realize I was using yesterday's hole location sheet. After I made that switch, I was good to go."

She birdied the par-5 10th, and Nos. 14, 17 and 18 — all par 4s.

Punahou School junior Stephanie Kono (73) shared second place with second-round leader Rachel Morris (75) of Carlsbad, Calif., and Taylore Karle (70) of Scottsdale, Ariz.

In the boys division, former Honolulu resident Chan Kim shot 75—217 to finish in a tie for 26th.

Elsewhere, Maui's Elyse Okada shot 77—238 to finish in a tie for 18th at the Ping Junior in Woodlands, Texas. Also, Honolulu's Kristina Merkle shot 38—210 (the final round was shortened to nine holes because of morning frost) to finish 40th at the Mizuno Junior in Braselton, Ga.
