Union accuses Tribune-Herald

An administrative law judge in Hilo is scheduled to hear 13 charges of unfair labor practices filed against the Hawaii Tribune-Herald newspaper, the Hawaii Newspaper Guild said yesterday.
The June 19 hearing, ordered by the National Labor Relations Board, will address a number of allegations, including the firing and suspension of reporters for engaging in protected union activity, and banning of union representatives from the Tribune-Herald facilities through a discriminatory application of building access policy.
Representatives of the newspaper have been given until April 13 to file a written response to the charges.
LONGS REPORTS SALES UP 2.9%
Longs Drug Stores Corp., the largest operator of drugstores in Hawai'i, said March same-store sales rose 2.9 percent compared with a year earlier.
The Walnut Creek, Calif.-based company reported total March retail drug store sales from continuing operations of $452.7 million, up from $431.5 million in the same period a year earlier.
HAWAII BIOTECH CHIEF STEPS DOWN
Hawaii Biotech Inc. said Leonard Firestone has stepped down as chief executive officer and director effective immediately. Carolyn Weeks-Levy, the company's vice president and chief scientific officer, will act as interim senior executive of the company.
Steven Mento, a member of the board, has been appointed chairman.
